5.0/52 Reviews

Iona, a remarkable architectural treasure, welcomes guests to experience its allure. Perched atop the Whanganui River bank, this dwelling offers breathtaking views of the historic town, as it is ingeniously constructed from the hull of a former fishing boat named Iona.

Iona Tiny House is conveniently located 2 hours and 15 minutes from Wellington, 5.5 – 6 hours from Auckland, and approximately 2 hours from New Plymouth.

Situated in Whanganui along the serene banks of the Whanganui River, Iona Tiny House provides a tranquil and rejuvenating sanctuary. Despite its peaceful ambiance, it is merely a 5-10 minute walk from the vibrant restaurants and bars of Victoria Ave. Staying here offers a unique city escape, distinct from our usual remote destinations.

A product of passion by the owner, a local architect, Iona Tiny House is truly one-of-a-kind. Crafted from the timber hull of the historical vessel Iona, every aspect of luxury and modern convenience has been carefully considered. Immerse yourself in the cedar hot tub for a celestial outdoor soak or cozy up beside the miniature wood burner on a winter’s evening. The queen-size bed is strategically positioned for optimal views of the meandering river.

Iona Tiny House invites you to relax, find comfort, read, stroll, sip wine, or indulge in a hot tub session with your loved one while admiring the twinkling city lights.

Tourism New Zealand has bestowed Iona Tiny House with a Silver Qualmark rating in recognition of its excellence.

Dining Options:

The in-house guidebook will recommend the host’s favorite establishments. Additionally, the art deco Embassy Theatre, showcasing a selection of excellent films, is conveniently located nearby. For live music enthusiasts, Lucky or the monthly Musician’s Club are within easy walking distance. Enjoy the outdoor fire at Iona or utilize the complete kitchen equipped with all necessary utensils. Super unique and cosy but has space in the most surprising of places! Epic lookout and walkway to the riverfront. Cute, oval hot tub on the deck is the best place in Whanganui to have a beer. Bed is very comfortable and the amenities are very functional and tasteful. 10 mins walk/3 mins drive to town CBD. The boardwalk round to the back has a low boundary rope and the boards has big gaps between them so not very accessible for wheelchairs or if you get too legless on the vinos! Perfect romantic getaway or place for an antipasto platter, a few wines and a bloody good book.

Beautiful absolutely stunning place to stay right on the banks of the Whanganui River. Easy access to town, peaceful and well set up. Lovely outdoor wooden hot tub. I highly recommend for a few days get away. It’s truly a little slice of heaven
