Our unique Flax Pod cabin is a repurposed shipping container with cool views of Golden Bay. It suits a couple, has a queen bed, sofa and basic kitchen facilities. Bifolding doors open onto a deck where you can totally relax, enjoy a cold beer, sink into a hot tub and soak up the sea views. Its in a great location and a great base to explore Golden Bay from. Enjoy getting back to the basics, dozing in a hammock, a friendly weka or two and a spectacular night sky.
The Flax Pod cabin is a converted shipping container and although pretty basic and very diy, it is warm, comfortable and in a cool location. Its a bit like glamping with its basic kitchen facilities, hot outdoor shower and composting toilet. The kitchen has a fridge, toaster, jug, double stove top, pots and pans, crockery and cutlery – you should find everything you need. There is no microwave or oven.
We are trialing a home made wood fired hot tub! It is just outside on the deck and although not flash it is private and amazing at night to soak in and gaze at the stars. We supply a box of wood to heat the hot tub. You can purchase more boxes off us for $10.
Note, the hot tub is a repurposed chest freezer so it is well insulated. It is heated by solar during day and fire at night. It takes 1-2 hours to heat by wood fire.
The views from the Flax Pod are pretty awesome. You can see over the ocean out towards Farewell Spit and into the western ranges. It is on a newly purchased property which we are regenerating back into native bush. We are still in the early stages of landscaping. It is usually quiet and peaceful, although we do have 3 kids being kids. You are free to wonder down to the stream area where the native trees are restoring and where, along the stream edge, you can see glow worms at night. Our family home is close by but you have your own space and we won’t disturb you.
A gas BBQ is available on request otherwise bring a bag of charcoal for the charcoal BBQ on the deck.
Park your car up on the gravel carpark platform to the left of the cabin. Just be careful when reversing out the next day.
There is a garden platform down in front of the container and a grassy space you can use if you fancy. Here you can pitch a tent or park campervans if you are in a bigger group.
You are also able to walk down to the stream and camping area, and wonder through the bush where we are developing paths to some glow worms and our Nikau grove. During the summer holidays there may be other guests in campervans parked in this area.
All hard surfaces are steralised and all linen ckeaned after each guest.
The toilet is a composting toilet that uses sawdust and wood chip rather than water. It is easy to use and doesn’t smell. It has a urine diverter and men need to sit which is a little unusual but don’t freak out, it works well.
Enjoy a wifi, TV and device free stay with us – a rare thing these days. We do not have wifi available or a TV but if you really need to, your mobile phones and devices should work on the limited signal we have in this area. Just be aware you are in a metal box so phones and internet signal work best outside on the deck.
